Why do we worship The Lord with singing and music? On the surface, we could say that we are encouraged to praise God for his awesomeness and blessings. Take the following verses as examples:
“Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him; Talk of all His wondrous works!”

“I will sing to the Lord, Because He has dealt bountifully with me.”

“Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving; Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.”

Delving deeper into God’s Word reveals that our worship is not just an act of glorification and thanksgiving, but there is a scripturally supported strategy to our worship. Our worship can do 3 remarkable things:
1. Help us to hear from the Lord.
2. Break down walls and barriers.
3. Confuse the enemy.
In II Kings 3, the prophet Elisha asked for a musician to help him get into the proper state of mind to hear the instructions from The Lord. After hearing the musician play, Elisha delivered key military strategies that guaranteed victory for God’s people.
“But now bring me a musician.” Then it happened, when the musician played, that the hand of the Lord came upon him.”

In Joshua 6, The Lord gave Joshua detailed and specific instructions on conquering the city of Jericho. None of these instructions included traditional weapons but the blowing of rams’ horns and a final divinely timed shout. With their horns and voices in an entire symphony, the fortified wall of Jericho came crashing down just as The Lord had promised.
“It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.”

In II Chronicles 20, we are shown that The Lord can use our singing and music to confuse the enemy into a self-attack mode, thereby weakening themselves and delivering us victory.
“And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: “Praise the Lord, For His mercy endures forever.” Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.” II Chronicles

The next time you open your mouth to make a joyful noise to The Lord, be confident that you are armed with the God-given advantage of strategic worship. With this advantage, God’s people can accomplish feats like supernatural healing, pulling down strongholds, and breaking generational curses. So, sing with a voice of triumph and make room in your trophy cabinet because your victories are on the way!
