The Truth About Binding the Strong Man

PART TWO of  “Unlocking the Power of Binding and Loosing” READ PART ONE 

For the Most Part, the Devil Roams Freely…Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Pe 5:8)

Warning!  You’ve got to be mature to accept what you’re about to read. I’m challenging a long-standing belief. However, the doctrine of binding the strong man is a sacred cow I’ll be happy to slay.

Many people presume the act of binding the devil imprisons, paralyzes, or incapacitates evil spirits. Not so. Saying, “I bind you devil”, or some variation thereof, is a common practice in Christian circles that is both powerless and lacking authority. Yet, people do it all the time. Maybe you’ve done it? Don’t feel bad, you’re not alone. Even the great ones have done it. I did, too, before the Holy Spirit corrected me.

According to the Word of God, the devil is neither imprisoned, paralyzed, or incarcerated. Look at these scriptures:

When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. (Mat 12:43-45)

Point #1 – A spirit that is cast out (disembodied) is not paralyzed – it “…walks about…” 

Point #2 – The disembodied spirit willfully returns to his host-body that he calls “…my house…” 

Point #3 –  If, when the spirit comes back (to the host-body), he finds it unguarded, he’s free to bring seven more devils with him to occupy the unguarded host-body.This is where misapplying the principle of binding can make matters worse. People think they’ve resolved their problem just by saying, “I bind thee Satan.” But, they’ve fallen asleep at the wheel. They get a false sense of security and they let down their guard. Now, they have a bigger problem than before.

Be careful! If you don’t know how to deal with the devil and evil spirits you might make matters worse. Don’t play games with the devil.

 This Is The Part That Will Challenge Your Thinking…

Whenever I say we cannot literally bind – incapacitate, paralyze, or imprison the devil – people push back with this scripture:

No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house. (Mark 3:27)

People say, “See! We can bind the strong man.”

Just a moment, let’s do some critical thinking. There are two parties  here:

(1) The thief who wants to break into a house

(2) The strong man who occupies the house

People presume the strong man of the house is the devil. Really? Then, who’s the thief?

The thief cometh not, but for to steal… (Jn 10:10)

Oh? The devil’s the thief? Then, who’s the strong man? (Think, Jimmy Neutron!)

Do we have two thieves here — one thief outside of the house and another inside the house?

Impossible! That’s why Jesus said, “How can Satan cast out Satan?”  (Mark 3:23)

We’ve Had Binding the Strong Man Backwards All These Years

Who is the thief and who is the strong man? Let Me Make it Plain:

The strong man is the rightful owner of the house. That would be you or me, for example. We are the strong man because we’re strong in the lord and the power of His might. The devil is weak. He wants your house, but you’re stronger than the devil.

The devil or an evil spirit wants to break into your house and rob you, but he can’t because you’re strong. The only way he can get into your house is to bind you through sin, deception, accusation, legalism, or condemnation. Only if you are bound, can he, the devil, take advantage of you.

Think about this: Jesus never tried to bind (imprison) devils, He cast them out!

Say this:

“I’m the strong man of my house! I’m stronger than the devil!

I’m the strong man of my house! I’m not going to let the devil bind me! 

I’m the strong man of my house! The thief’s not going to enter my house and steal my goods!”

I’m the strong man of my house! I’m free of the things Satan uses to bind me!

I’m the strong man of my house! I won’t let an evil spirit bring seven evil spirits into my house!

I’m the strong man of my house! My house is occupied by me and it’s filled with God’s glory!

I’m the strong man of my house! There’s no place for the devil in my house!

I’m the strong man of my house! I resist the devil and he flees from me!

Here is the way I see things. The devil is free to go wherever he wants, just not to my house. He’s free to run from me in terror. He’s free to walk in dry places, seeking rest, finding none.

Now, put this teaching together with Part 1 and you have the truth about binding and loosing. The devil may illegally try to bind you, but he can’t if you know your New Covenant rights
