How Much More the Blood of Christ?
In the previous article, we explored the astonishing ministry of physical blood. Tens of trillions of red blood cells continually serve the human body, delivering life-sustaining oxygen and removing harmful waste.
The writer of Hebrews now takes us from the natural realm into the spiritual realm.
“For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” Hebrews 9:13-14
Notice the phrase “How much more.” The writer argues from the lesser to the greater. If physical blood sustains physical life, how much more does the Blood of Christ sustain spiritual life? If physical blood removes physical waste, how much more does the Blood of Christ remove sin, guilt, condemnation, and dead works? Physical blood can sustain the body for a season. The Blood of Christ ministers eternal life, not just to the spirit, but also to the soul and body: that is
how much more the blood of Christ will do in a life.
The Breath of God and the Gift of Life
Scripture repeatedly presents God as the source of life. In creation, God formed man from the dust of the earth and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Life began when God’s breath entered humanity. Throughout Scripture, breath, wind, and spirit become recurring symbols of God’s life-giving presence. This truth finds its most powerful expression after Christ’s resurrection. John records that Jesus breathed upon His disciples and said, “Receive ye the Holy
Ghost, ” John 20:22. The same God who breathed life into Adam now breathes spiritual life through the risen Christ.
The Blood and the Breath
Look at this important parallel: the physical blood carries oxygen throughout the body. Without oxygen, physical life cannot continue. Likewise, spiritual life flows from Christ through the ministry of His Spirit. The Blood of Christ and the Spirit of God work together in God’s redemptive plan. Read First John 5:6-8: “…the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost…and there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood.”
Together, they secure redemption, impart life, and sustain it. The result is that God’s life reaches every dimension of human existence. The gospel is not merely about forgiveness. It is about life. The Blood of Christ does not just rescue us from judgment; it brings us into living fellowship with God Himself. This is why Christianity is not simply a religious system. It is participation in divine life through Jesus Christ. And if the Blood of Christ truly ministers life, an important
question remains: What exactly does that ministry accomplish in the believer today?
In Part Three, we will examine the continual ministry of the Blood of Christ and why Communion remains such a powerful declaration of His life.
